Life Can Be a Juggling Act, Self-Care is Necessary.

Navigating Work, Caregiving, Ph.D. Studies, and Life

Balancing the demands of work, caregiving, and pursuing a Ph.D. is no small feat. Finding the time to care for myself can feel impossible when I’m constantly switching between these roles. Yet, prioritizing self-care is essential to sustain my well-being and manage these responsibilities effectively.

In this blog post, I will explore some of the challenges I face while juggling these demanding roles and share some practical self-care strategies that can make a world of difference.

The Challenges

Making Time for Self

When life is packed with tasks and responsibilities, self-care often falls to the bottom of the priority list. Simple activities like getting a mani/pedi, keeping chiropractor and massage appointments, or even hanging out with friends, can seem like luxury items I can’t afford.

Guilt and Anxiety

Taking time for oneself often comes with feelings of guilt and anxiety. I worry about neglecting work, caregiving, or my studies. At times, this guilt can be paralyzing, preventing me from taking the necessary steps to care for myself.

Lack of Support

Balancing these roles, often means feeling like I’m going it alone. Without a solid support system, it can be challenging to delegate tasks and create space for personal care.

Effective Self-Care Strategies

Prioritize and Schedule Self-Care

Treat self-care activities as vital commitments. I have to schedule them into my week just like I would a work meeting or a study session. This includes setting specific times for relaxation, exercise, or personal appointments.

Utilize Technology for Time Management

I leverage technology to keep track of my schedule and set reminders for self-care activities. I use Google Calendar, but Apps like Todoist, Me+ Daily Routine, or even simple reminder functions on your phone can help you block out time for yourself and stick to it.

Delegate Tasks

Delegation is key to making time for self-care. I’ve learned to delegate work tasks to colleagues, when possible, share caregiving responsibilities with family members, or seeking help from professors and fellow students, don’t hesitate to ask for support. Creating a bit of breathing room can make a significant difference.

Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion

Mindfulness practices can help you stay present and reduce stress. Techniques such as napping, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few moments to be still can improve your mental clarity and reduce anxiety. Additionally, I practice self-compassion, it allows me to be as kind to myself, as I am to others, and minimizes the guilt associated with taking time for personal care.

Establish a Support System

I’ve built a network of friends, family, and colleagues who understand my situation and can offer support when needed. Having people to lean on can provide emotional relief and practical help, making it easier to manage your workload and responsibilities.

Conclusion

Balancing work, caregiving, and Ph.D. studies is undoubtedly challenging, but I cannot afford to overlook my self-care. By prioritizing and scheduling self-care activities, utilizing technology for time management, delegating tasks, practicing mindfulness and self-compassion, and establishing a support system, you can create a more sustainable and fulfilling routine. Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.
