One of the best parts about being part of a local community-supported agriculture program (CSA) is the surprise factor. Every two weeks, from May through October, I swing by the It Takes a Village Community Farm to pick up a fresh assortment of locally grown produce. Most of the time, I’m greeted by familiar favorites, but every now and then, I discover something completely new.
This week, that something was rhubarb.
I’ve never had rhubarb before, let alone cooked with it. But that’s part of the fun, right? Trying something unfamiliar. Stretching your comfort zone in small, delicious ways.
My friend started browsing recipes, rhubarb crisp, pie, jam, and then she stumbled across one that I could live with: Lemon Rhubarb Loaf. Bright citrus paired with tart rhubarb? Yes, please.
I rolled up my sleeves, chopped the ruby red stalks, zested a lemon, and got to work. The smell that filled my kitchen was faint while it baked, but it had a slightly sweet, citrusy, and just a little bit tangy smell.
Here’s how it turned out:
Golden. Moist. Slightly crisp on the edges. And delightful with a cup of tea.
It’s funny how something as simple as rhubarb, a vegetable I’ve always passed by, can turn into an experience that feels fresh and adventurous. That’s the beauty of trying new things. Sometimes, the reward is more than just a tasty treat, it’s the joy of discovery.
Whether it’s a new ingredient, a new hobby, or a new path entirely, I’m learning to say yes a little more often.
Here’s to being open, curious, and just brave enough to try.
Have you tried anything new lately?
